Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the essential tools for preparing traditional matcha?

The core tools include a bamboo whisk (chasen), matcha scoop (chashaku), tea bowl (chawan), sifter, and whisk holder. Each plays a role in ensuring smooth texture, authentic flavour, and a calming ritual.

2. Why use a bamboo matcha whisk instead of a regular whisk or spoon?

A bamboo chasen has 80–120 fine tines that are specifically designed to blend matcha evenly and create the signature frothy top—something metal whisks or spoons can't replicate.

3. How do I clean and maintain my matcha tools?

Rinse bamboo tools under lukewarm water immediately after use. Do not use soap or dishwashers. Let the whisk dry on a whisk holder to retain its shape and prevent mould.

4. What does a matcha whisk holder do? Do I really need one?

Yes—called a kusenaoshi, the whisk holder helps maintain the chasen’s curved shape, extends its life, and allows it to dry properly between uses.

5. Do I need a matcha sifter? Can’t I skip it?

Sifting your matcha powder is essential for avoiding clumps and achieving a smooth, lump-free brew. A fine mesh sifter improves taste and texture.

6. What kind of bowl should I use for matcha?

A chawan (matcha bowl) is ideal. Its wide base allows proper whisking and foam creation. Our ceramic chawans are handcrafted to combine function with beauty.

7. Are these tools authentic and sustainable?

Yes—all our matcha tools are handcrafted, made from natural bamboo or ceramic, and sourced with sustainability in mind. We work with artisans who honour Japanese traditions.

8. Can I buy a complete matcha kit?

Absolutely. We offer thoughtfully curated matcha tea kits with everything you need to begin or upgrade your ritual—perfect for beginners or as a meaningful gift.

9. How should I store my matcha tools?

Keep them in a dry, cool place out of direct sunlight. Store your whisk upright on a holder and avoid storing bamboo tools in airtight containers when wet.

10. Do you offer shipping across Australia?

Yes! We ship Australia-wide from Brisbane. Orders over $100 qualify for free standard shipping.
